Heritage Oaks Bank Donates to SLO County Office of Education - 8/12/13

Contributions from B.O.O.K. Debit Card Program to Go to Family Literacy Program

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—At a San Luis Obispo County Office of Education meeting on August 1, Heritage Oaks Bank made the first of what will be an ongoing series of contributions to the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education (SLO COE). In 2012, Heritage Oaks Bank launched the “Banking on Our Kids” (B.O.O.K.) Program, which provides a special debit card that triggers a $.05 contribution for each transaction a customer does using a signature. The contributions are then given to the County Office of Education where the customer lives.

In San Luis Obispo County, the money raised will go to the SLO COE affiliate of Raising a Reader, a nationwide organization that loansShannon White Bond, Senior Program Coordinator at the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, Julian Crocker, Superintendent of the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, and Liz Summer, Senior Client Relationship Manager at Heritage Oaks Bank. books to local children weekly and encourages reading for the whole family. The Bank’s initial donation of over $2,500 consisted of funds collected since the B.O.O.K. program launched in mid-2012 and the Bank will continue to present the donations quarterly.

“We were thrilled to receive this donation from Heritage Oaks Bank,” said Shannon White Bond, Senior Program Coordinator at the SLO COE. “Raising a Reader is a national program that loans high-quality children’s books to local kids each week and connects families with local libraries so they can develop a lifelong habit of reading and learning.” Liz Summer, a Senior Client Relationship Manager for the Bank, added “We’re honored to help the SLO COE and Raising a Reader with our B.O.O.K. Program. B.O.O.K. makes it easy for our customers to help local education while going about their daily purchasing routine.”

To participate in the B.O.O.K. program, a customer of Heritage Oaks Bank must have a deposit account and request the special B.O.O.K. debit card. Then, the customer simply uses the card for purchases just as they normally would. The Bank tracks the eligible transactions and provides the contributions to the customer’s local county office of education. To find out more, contact any local branch of Heritage Oaks Bank.
